COMMUNITY RENT SCHEMES (CRS)

What are Community Rent Schemes (CRS)?

Community Rent Schemes are aimed to support you if you are experiencing difficulty in accessing housing through the private market. The CRS is a transitional housing option for people who are eligible for public housing through the Department of Housing, and who are on a waiting list. There are a number of CRS that are youth specific, and one that is specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

CRS are a cheaper option than renting in the private market as they only charge a percentage of your income (usually 25%). Although CRS do not provide support to young people accessing the accommodation, they do manage wait lists, referrals and tenancy management of properties. Therefore, the main target group for CRS are independent young people who have existing supports in their lives.

Who can apply?

In order to be eligible for public housing, you must meet certain criteria. You have to earn not more than a certain amount each week, be already living in Queensland and be a permanent Australian resident.
