Youth homelessness Matters Day is a national campaign which aims to raise public awareness of youth homelessness.
The campaign is an initiative of the National Youth Coalition for Housing (NYCH), the national body for the State and Territory youth homeless peaks and networks.
This year the Queensland Youth Housing Coalition was calling for a Queensland Youth Homelessness Action Plan (QYHAP). In particular we were keen to highlight that the response to homelessness needs to encapsulate all homelessness experiences - not just the ones that are in the public eye. As much of youth homelessness is hidden a Queensland Youth Homelessness Action Plan would ensure a more robust response to the issue.
As part of this call a short film festival highlighting the issues for specific groups of young people was shown at the Brisbane State Library. The event was booked out early and the Queensland Youth Housing Coalition joined in partnership the services listed below to showcase the short films:
Darumbal Youth Services, Open Doors, Othila's, Youth Housing Project, Inala Youth Service, Mercy Family Services and North West Youth Accommodation Service
There was also a panel exploring the key components of QYHAP and we would like to thank - CREATE Foundation, Left Right Think tank and Wally Dethlefs for participating on the panel.
We were very fortunate to have the Federal Minister for Housing - the Hon. Tanya Plibersek join us and we would like to thank her for the time she spent with us answering questions and viewing some of the short films.
Queensland Youth Housing Coalition Annual General Meeting and 25th birthday celebrations held on the 25th September at Parliament House was a great success.
Maroochy Barambah warmly welcomed us to country and it is always moving to experience her traditional welcome.
We would like to thank Senator Claire Moore who represented the Prime Minister for her vibrant speech on the role of the community sector.
We would also like to thank Lillian van Litsenburg - State Member for Redcliffe who represented the Hon Karen Struthers for her acknowledgement of the important role played by QYHC in advocating for young people and the services who support them.
Lastly we would like to acknowledge the correspondence from the Governor General and her kind words and best wishes for QYHC's 25th birthday.
In 2009 the Youth Homelessness Matters campaign in Queensland was keen to hear directly from young people, services and community members about their thoughts and ideas on what youth homelessness means to them.
We had a fantastic response with 30 short films posted by young people and concerned community members.
