YSCs work with young people and where appropriate with their families to provide information and support that will
contribute to the
young person’s continued engagement with education and training
in both schools and TAFE institutes. YSCs are a valuable conduit between schools, TAFE and the community sector providing a coordination role.
YSCs respond to young people's identified issues and may
work with young people around issues of family conflict,
homelessness and other home or school based circumstances.
YSCs may also assist young people to overcome practical barriers
to staying at school such as transport and accommodation.
There are many ways that a young people can
access the YSC Program, referrals can come from anyone in the young person's community:
- Young people themselves
- Teachers
- Principals
- Parents
- Friends
- School staff
- Community organisations
Young people's involvement with YSC services is voluntary.
In 2010, YSCs provided 5524 instances of direct support to young people across Queensland.
