October 2022 Edition

Platform 1225 2022

Collaborate, don’t compete. Work with heart!

This was the overarching message on Monday 24 October 2022, when QYHC hosted the much-anticipated Platform 1225! Putting on a conference in the midst of a pandemic has been challenging. We’ve faced rescheduling and rejigging of programs and presenters on multiple occasions. Here we are and Covid-19 still had an impact on the event - our MC and keynote speaker Comedian and Satirist Corey White was struck down with the virus in Melbourne.

There was last minute scrambling and rallying from the team to pull everything together right up until three minutes prior to the official opening. From the moment MC Jenny Wynter took to the podium, the energy in the room was awesome. Our sector is so generous and made the most of the swings and roundabouts and soaked up the inspiring insights offered in abundance. An absolute strength of our sector that we appreciate enormously. Youth Homelessness Policy
and Framework Launched

_IMAGE_Towards Ending Homelessness
Earlier this month the Queensland Government released ‘Towards ending homelessness for young Queenslanders 2022-2027.’ This policy and framework comes with a $29.8 million investment to deliver initiatives to ensure young Queenslanders have the information, opportunities and support to access safe, secure and affordable housing when they need it.

QYHC was pleased to partner with DCHDE, the sector and young people in the development of this policy and framework. The inclusion of $7 million to work with First Nation young people and a pilot model of accommodation for young parents in Brisbane are amongst the highlights. These groups of young people are particularly marginalised and consistently find it difficult to access accommodation. Read more here

Restoring Respect to
Community Service Workers

LOGO_The Services Union
The Federal Government has announced a $560 million funding boost to the community services sector. Community services have been underfunded and overworked for too long. This announcement is a huge first step but we need to work together to ensure that this funding delivers excellent services to the community and secures fairly paid jobs for its workers.

Queensland Housing Summit Thursday 20th October

IMAGE_QLD Housing Summit speaker
Following from the Housing Roundtable last month, QYHC’s Executive Director, Lorraine and our Management Committee’s young person rep, Jordanah, attended the Queensland Housing Summit. Premier Palaszczuk, Minister Enoch, Deputy Premier Miles and many other Ministers and MPs brought together people with a lived experience of homelessness and housing need as well as representatives from the private and community sectors, and various government departments. The array of representative’s present demonstrated that it is going to take a concerted and collective effort to tackle the current housing crisis.

The summit examined ways of providing more social and affordable housing and innovative ideas to solve the housing issues while planning and preparing for more housing stock into the future.

It was heartening to have the Premier and Ministers commit to having all Queenslanders housed. Echoing her statement at the Roundtable the Premier again acknowledged the hard work of the homelessness sector are the support and assistance they require.

QYHC acknowledges the significance of the Roundtable and Summit. There is so much more to do. We are committed to continuing to work with our sector, government, and peak partners to ensure that all young people are safely housed.

Young People and
the Federal Budget

New employment and education opportunities for young people in the budget but more needs to be done to improve the quality of life for young Australians.

The budget commits $13.4 million over four years, and $4.2 million each year ongoing, to develop a 10-year National Housing and Homelessness Plan in 2023. The National Housing and Homelessness Agreement (NHHA) will also be extended by one year until 30 June 2024 while the new agreement is developed.

Housing in the News

Housing affordability is impacting the nation. With soaring house prices, rental hikes and a shortage of homes, it’s a national priority. The Queensland Housing Summit attracted additional news this month. Read the following articles:

JOIN THE CAMPAIGN!

IMAGE_Raise the rate for good
The campaign to Raise the Rate for Good is key to reducing poverty and inequality in Australia.
The goal of this campaign is to raise Australia’s social security safety net to alleviate poverty. This requires an income of at least $70 a day.

QYHC consistently reminds government and stakeholders that poverty is the main precursor to homelessness. Income support for young people that keeps them above the poverty line is essential. QYHC is a proud supporter of the Raise the Rate for Good campaign as this is key to reducing poverty and inequality in Australia.

With nothing in the latest budget for those living way below the poverty line - You can take action and learn more here.

Call to Halve
Child Poverty by 2030

Poverty affects far too many Australian children and families. As one of the wealthiest countries in the world, it’s just not right that 1 in 6 of our children grow up in poverty. These were amongst the messages of the recent Anti-Poverty Week, a campaign aimed at improving community understanding of poverty and calling on collective action to eradicate it. The campaign calls upon all politicians to commit to halve child poverty by 2030. Sign the pledge here.
