First Time Renter – A step by step guide to getting a rental property

Becoming a first time renter can be exciting but it can also be daunting.
|
|
The First Time Renter project is a collaboration between Queensland Youth Housing Coalition (QYHC), Community Connections (CLA Inc.), Tenants Queensland (TQ), and Youth Advocacy Centre (YAC). The collaboration was established to meet the gap in information for young people regarding steps to accessing tenancies in either private rental or public housing. The resources produced through the collaboration give young people and vulnerable first-time renters the foundational “how to” information required to successfully complete private rental applications and commence tenancies. Queensland Government Fiscal and Economic Review
The COVID-19 Fiscal and Economic Review provides an update on Queensland’s economic and fiscal estimates over 2019-20 and 2020-21 that incorporate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic to date. The report also outlines the Queensland Government’s economic strategy that builds on the Unite and Recover: Queensland Economic Recovery Plan, highlighting more than $7 billion committed to support jobs and the economic capacity of Queensland. Investing in energy efficiency and solar PV for social housing dwellings will create thousands of jobs during the COVID-19 crisis, ensure that more money is invested in local economies, and result in lower energy bills for low-income households.

emPOWER Homes: A Social Homes Energy Support Stimulus proposal from QCOSS, Queensland Conservation Council and Solar Citizens is a $215 million package that would install solar and energy efficient upgrades on social homes across Queensland, saving households up to $1,100 per year on their energy bills. The proposal would create more than 1,800 jobs and stimulate local economies during the COVID-19 crisis. Read the proposal here

National Homelessness Conference 2020
|
The 2020 National Homelessness Conference is going ahead, – online,– on 1st and 2nd December.
|
The conference program will examine the impacts on our sector from the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic as well as the catastrophic climate disasters of last summer. The program will also cover the major challenges and opportunities in homelessness policy and practice that were in play before and will continue to be important after the pandemic.

Inquiry into youth employment and transitions: Interim findings report.
|
The National Youth Commission Australia (NYCA) Inquiry’s Interim Report presents findings about the conditions for success needed by young people as they navigate their transitions from school to work, and from entry into the labour force towards sustainable employment.
|
|
This is an Interim Report because the Inquiry process is designed to ensure that the Commission can validate our analysis of the evidence gathered and test the ideas for policy reform: better ways to engage young people; the resources that need to be invested, shared, or reconfigured; and suggestions about who needs to be involved in the changes. The Australian Community Sector Survey (ACSS) finds the community service sector is under pressure due to COVID-19. With expected cuts to income support for 500,000 Queenslanders and the ending of the eviction moratorium for renters impacted by COVID-19, services are bracing for increased pressure.

Researchers from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Social Policy Research Centre have used the survey findings to produce the report.

World Homeless Day is the 10th of October annually. The purpose of World Homeless Day is to draw attention to homeless people’s needs locally, and provide opportunities for the community to get involved in responding to homelessness, while taking advantage of the stage an ‘international day’ provides.
