What is Public Housing?

In Queensland public housing and community housing provision have been joined together to create the One Social Housing System.

Public Housing offers secure and affordable rental housing too low to moderate income earning families and individuals, who are experiencing difficulties in accessing accommodation through the private market. Types of housing offered include: detached house; duplex; cluster house; attached house (town house); apartment; senior’s unit. Public housing is only available in certain areas and waiting lists for public housing can be very long.

Who Can Apply?

In order to be eligible for public housing, you must meet certain criteria. You have to earn not more than a certain amount each week, be already living in Queensland and be a permanent Australian resident.

Once you have applied for public housing, you will be placed on a waiting list. The amount of time you will have to wait will depend on how many people are on the waiting list and the availability of housing in your nominated areas.
